I don't get motion sickness when playing games... Except driving games... I have that "leaning" thing when steering.

Hey all,

First time poster here. Been looking at this tread and I find a good number of responses most intriguing. I will say that the female side of gamers is indeed steadily increasing, both in size and skill.

Never let it be said that they are the weaker of the species. Believe me I know. Been gaming since well, since much longer then most of you here ;-)

In any case, this number will only increase as games become more advance and more involved. MMORPG's are a perfect example of this evolution. Once thought to be a great place to Roleplay and game, it is also safe to say that it is also a place to socialize (and possibly more, if one ends up meeting the right person). I remember once when hooking up with someone online was very taboo or as the normies would say, "your're such a geek".

Well my friends, look around today. That aspect of gaming has simply evolved. Examples are Match.com, etc. When I say the geeks will rule the world, psst. Look around. We already do.

*cough*women gamers*cough*
My guild consists largely of m/f couples... Myself excluded...

I might note that the female characters in Guild Wars resemble something akin to sexed up barbie dolls. Funny how even some of the armor has cleavage showing just for women (contradictory to the point of armor). Though, this is usually the case for most games.

An interesting question to ponder is whether or not this actually does anything to deter women from playing games.

I would be quick to say yes, but then I looked at some magazine targeted to women...

Anyhow, I think what is actually increasing the amount of women playing games is the increasing complexity of gameplay and scope of videogames. Essentially, games that can appeal to EVERYONE, and not just a select target audience, seem to have a larger ratio of female players (like the Sims).

I really can't say that Guild Wars has a broad enough scope to really appeal to the majority of women. Of course, not being the majority of women, I really couldn't tell you specifically why.

There are alot of female gamers coming forth but those numbers are horribly wrong if your trying to base it only on MMOGs ect. The majority play card games on yahoo or what not.

GW seems to have a larger player base of females though. Matter of fact, the 2 people I am always grouping with are very much females. One is VERY skilled. The other is still learning but picking it up quite quickly and kicking some ass. Both are Eles...hehe

Another female gamer checking in, and I've played RPGs since Diablo (original one). I've nearly always chosen a spell casting character, as I prefer not to get hit by monsters. I'd much rather kill you from almost a screen away, at least. I am rather picky about my games though. My sister (another RPGer) tried to get me into EQ, but my "sensible" side refuses to actually pay to play a game that I own.

Female gamer. I have four daughters, all who are gamers too. With the exception of one, we prefer mmorpg's because of the social aspect that comes with the gaming. One daughter excells at healing classes. I'm a tanker in most games (and told I'm damned good at it). One daughter is a Halo Queen and beats all her male friends. She and one of her sisters are sought out on a regular basis to attend LAN parties and we've hosted our fair share of LAN parties at our house.

Diablo wasn't an RPG.

Any of those daughters around 18-21 years old?

You are my dream family in-laws.

Yet another female here. Every girl I associate with is a gamer...because i hang around a gamer club. I happen to like the part where girls get discounts at gaming stores, and I got so much off my puter when I bought it simply because I was a girl XD

I also really love the part where guys get weirded out by girls buying games, and they think they're talking quietly enough for you not to hear them being freaked out.

Me, me, me too!
I've done as many FF games as I could. My on-line history consists of TSO and SL. Neather lasted long enough, all they were were giant chat rooms. I'm not one for graphic violence, GW is perfect for me.

There's a lot of girl gamers I believe that play final fantasy xi online. You can take a peek at www.ffxiplayers.com
Sadly my ffxi days seem to be over. That's a super lvl grinding mmorpg. Guildwars for the win.

From my experience (which is pretty broad), females are far more common in the RPG environment. For instance, in the AA community (America's Army, or AA, is an FPS sponsored by the government) of all the active posters, there are something like 3 or four females, out of thousands of players. I imagine there are more who actually play, but thefraction is still small. The same holds true for other FPs's, CS:S for example.

In RPG environments I could maybe believe a 43% ratio, as women do seem to be astoundingly more common.

I am a 29 year old female. I grew up with an older brother, and started my video game obsession with the Atari 2600. I have been a pretty major gamer ever since. I play tons of types of games, not just platformers and RPGs. I loved HL2 and Doom 3, and the original Deus Ex. Oh, I could go on and on.

In fact, that is one reason my gamer (works in the field, too) fiance loves me so much. He thinks I'm rare. (don't show him the stats)

We have 3 PCs, 3 Xboxes, 1 PS2, and a GameCube currently hooked up. There are 3 adults living there. My older consoles have retired to the closet for the most part.

Since my mother, as well as many other women I know, have been playing games since the '70s (Pong, anyone?), your statement holds no validity.

One word: emulation. We built an HTPC and set up emulators for all our old (stuffed in the garage somehwere) favorite NES, SNES, Genesis and even Gameboy games. You wouldn't believe how great this is for parties. Load up Super Mario Bros. and let the communal nostalgia trip begin. And I find most people of my generation, men and women, can play THAT game with their eyes closed.

I tend to stay away from making friends with female players, they always have 50 million losers trying to win their digital hearts. Ah cyberlove, what a revolting thing
